Why don't we create a new popular culture together?
What is the MilkHall?
During the Taisho era (1912-1926), a coffee shop culture called "MilkHall" which had a Western salon-like atmosphere and attracted many high-caliber cultural figures, became popular. MilkHall served milk, coffee, doughnuts, sponge cakes, and other refreshments, and the store was lined with magazines and official gazettes. Young people and businessmen read them with a glass of milk in hand.
The MilkHall had formed a membership organization to sustainably run it. It seems that cultural figures such as painters, literary scholars, musicians, writers, scriptwriters, media people, actors, and politicians gathered there to create new culture or to discuss existing culture.
Where new pop culture is born.
We hope that new pop culture will continue to emerge from our community. Sometimes it will be led by the core members of 1912, sometimes not. We are working to create a place like the above - MilkHall. Therefore, we will give those who commit to this activity an impressive role in the community.
Taisho & Ogaki & Community
Attractive time-space location
1912 takes place in Ogaki City, Gifu Prefecture, the geographical center of Japan in the Taisho Era of 1912. Gifu Prefecture is an important land in Japan's history and has always been involved in turning points in Japan. And Ogaki City is known as the city of water, filled with cool, refreshing colors. There also exists a beautiful Japanese sweet called mizumanju, which has been popular since the Meiji era.
In the Taisho era, Western culture became popularized, and more Japanese people came into contact with Western culture than in the Meiji era. Then, a fashion trend called "Japanese-Western fusion" became popular, taking the best aspects of Japanese culture, one of the cultures of the East, and Western culture and combining them well. Then came the spread of the café culture known as milk halls and the dispersion of western confectionery techniques throughout Japan. Along with sweets such as caramels, drops, and old-fashioned kompeito, which had been very expensive, became more popular among the general public, western confectionaries, which had been very expensive, became popular in many parts of Japan.
We have represented this cultural background and Japanese-Western fashion as NFT. And they are 1912 talented young confectioners, fashionable modern girls and modern boys.
Two types of communities created by the 1912 community
The Japanese-Western fusion can be divided into two types of fashion: one with a strong Japanese origin, and the other with a strong Western origin. The former can be said to be fashion that carefully elaborates traditional culture, while the latter, in contrast, is fashion that incorporates new culture in an innovative way. We have represented the former cultural trend as a mizumanju and the latter as a kompeito. We then decided to name each community Mizumanju-Shokai-Rengo and Kompeito-Syokai-Rengo. And here at MilkHall, we hope to create better and more interesting pop culture through friendly competition with each other.
